The Region of Central Macedonia’s new three-year wide area mosquito control project for the years 2026–2028 has started since mid-April, which is being implemented with the aim of protecting public health and improving the quality of life for citizens.
This year, as part of the project and throughout the duration of fieldwork, more than 7,000 larval samples are collected each week from over 20,000 potential mosquito breeding sites and approximately 160,000 acres of wetland systems, 420,000 acres of agricultural systems, 7,000 km of canals and streams, public spaces in the cities of Central Macedonia, as well as 100,000 catch basins and over 40,000 private septic tanks in settlements at high risk for West Nile virus infection.
Field operations are being carried out by a total of 40 crews supported by a team of twenty (20) highly specialized scientists from Ecodevelopment.
At the same time, as every year, the free “Mosquito Vision” app went live in early May, allowing citizens to report mosquito nuisance and identify potential breeding sites. The app can be downloaded free of charge by anyone interested from the Google Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gr.ecodev.mosquitovision) and the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/gr/app/mosquito-vision/id1573016624).
Finally, a free hotline (800-11-244-24) is available for calls from landlines regarding mosquito protection.
