Update on the Karla area (Thessaly)

The President of Ecodevelopment Dr Spiros Mourelatos gave relevant information at the meeting with representatives of the areas around Karla on the issue of mosquito control, organized yesterday by the Region of Thessaly in the regional council chamber in Larissa, in preparation for the protection of areas after the floods of last September.

In the briefing he was particularly reassuring about the possible risks of an outbreak of infectious diseases caused by mosquitoes. He said that perhaps the large accumulation of water in the areas around lake Karla this year does not necessarily imply a greater nuisance or increased epidemiological risk than in previous years. He also stressed that the likelihood of developing infectious diseases, such as malaria and West Nile virus, is low and any risk would possibly appear after June.

He explained that the potentially high-risk areas for mosquito development are the drainage networks and rural areas from which flood waters are withdrawn, while in contrast, there is no increased risk of population development in the unified flooded area of Karla.

In any case, Ecodevelopment has been systematically mapping all high-risk areas for 25 years and taking actions to control mosquito larvae in order to drastically reduce their population. Finally, he noted that preparations for this year have already begun and all the necessary actions have been planned (mapping of areas, epidemiological controls, planning of spraying, etc.).
