Region of Western Greece: Launch of the new three-year mosquito control project (2026–2028)

The Region of Western Greece’s new three-year mosquito control project for 2026–2028 is in progress since early April, following the signing of the relevant contract.

This year, as part of the project’s first year, larviciding activities (fieldwork—sampling and spraying) will be carried out on approximately 50,000 acres that are particularly productive in terms of mosquito larvae, 1,600 kilometers of canals and streams requiring monitoring in the agricultural and peri-urban systems, 15,000 acres of flooded areas in the natural, agricultural, and peri-urban systems of all settlements in the Region, 7,000 acres of rice fields in the Regional Unit of Aetoloacarnania, 1,000 scattered small-scale flood areas in the rural and peri-urban systems, as well as 30,000 catch basins in cities and settlements within the Regional Development Plan and over 20,000 private septic tanks in settlements at high risk of West Nile virus infection.

In parallel with ground operations, and following the issuance of a relevant permit by the Ministry of Health, aerial larviciding and adulticiding operations using drones have also begun in areas deemed necessary.

Fieldwork is being carried out by more than 20 field teams, supported on a daily basis by ten field scientists, while a team of over ten scientists provides highly specialized support for the project’s needs.

To improve project coordination, working meetings are expected to be held between the Project Team and representatives of the Contracting Authority for each Regional Unit (Public Health Directorate, members of the project’s control and monitoring committees), where the project implementation timeline will be presented.

In any case, it is essential for citizens to take preventive measures to avoid creating mosquito breeding sites on private property, as well as to take personal measures to protect themselves from mosquitoes.

At the same time, starting in early May, the free “Mosquito Vision” app will be launched, as every year, through which citizens can receive updates on mosquito activity predictions and report potential breeding sites. The app can be downloaded free of charge by anyone interested from the Google Play Store (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gr.ecodev.mosquitovision) and the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/gr/app/mosquito-vision/id1573016624).

For issues regarding mosquito nuisance and protection, the public may call the toll-free number 800-11-244-24 from a landline Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
