Information event for the mosquito control project of the Region of Western Macedonia

The all-day event organized by the Region of Western Macedonia on the ongoing mosquito control project was successfully held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, in the central square of Kozani. It was announced by the Deputy Regional Governor of Public Health Mr. Giorgos Margaritis and other officials of the Public Health Directorate.

The aim was to inform the citizens about the mosquito control project implemented by the Region and information about the contribution of all of us, both to avoid the creation of breeding sites for mosquitoes in our area, and to protect against their bites. During the event, there was a presentation of the project to the citizens of the region and information on the reproduction of mosquitoes and their life cycle by specialized personnel of the Region and Ecodevelopment (contractor of the control project), so that appropriate precautionary measures can be taken in the homes and elsewhere.

Children were the main audience at this year’s informative event about mosquitoes in the central square of Kozani. As part of the event, with the presence of stilts, young visitors had the opportunity to see up close, an aquarium with live mosquito larvae as well as mosquito adults using a stereoscope. Through educational games, the children learned about the biological life cycle of mosquitoes and the breeding grounds that are probably created in our homes.

Finally, for the protection measures that all citizens must take for prevention, it was emphasized that these are screens on doors and windows, mosquito lotions, indoor and outdoor spraying if necessary and avoiding standing water in yards them for over three to four days. “In cases where we know there are mosquitoes outside, it would be good to go out with long clothes to make it difficult for the mosquitoes to bite,” said Mr. Lazos, responsible for the mosquito control project in Western Macedonia.

The event was organized by the Directorate of Public Health and Social Care of the Western Macedonia Region.
